Michael Laing OBE a member of Vistage in Scotland discusses his first year of membership. Michael is the owner, managing director and a gemmologist of Laing the Jewellers. As much a designer as he is a buinessman, Michael studied art, design and craftmanship at Sir John Cass College in London. He then went on to train with a number of well-known jewellery manufacturers.
For over 20 years, he has served on the National Association of Goldsmiths education Committee in London. Latterly, he has been its Chairman, overseeing jewellery-trade training in the UK. He has been a Fellow of the Gemmological Association since 1973.
He is also Chairman of the Assay Office Scotland, which tests and hallmarks gold, silver and platinum, the oldest form of consumer protection in the world. Indeed, it was for his ervices to hallmarking that he received his OBE.
